Some services are booked for many days — a dog walker every evening, a tiffin every afternoon, a tutor every week. If your plans change halfway, you should not have to pay for days you don’t use. That is what pro-rata cancellation is for. Here is how it works, with a real 30-day example.

What pro-rata means

Pro-rata means “in proportion”. If you book 30 days and stop after 12, you pay for 12 days and get back the money for the other 18.

Not every listing has it. Before you book, look for Pro-rata in the cancellation terms on the listing. Providers can choose it only when they charge per day, per class or per item.

The example: an evening dog walker

Meena lives in Anna Nagar with Rocky, her Labrador. She finds this listing on Brouz:

The listingI can walk your dog for 1 hour every evening, between 6 and 9 pm. ₹150 per day. Comes to you — free within 3 km. Cancellation: Pro-rata.

Before booking, Meena taps Enquire and asks the walker what time he usually comes, and what happens on rainy days. They agree on 6:30 pm. The listing gives the time window; you agree the exact time in the chat.

She books 30 days, starting Monday 2 November, and chooses delivery, so the walker gets her address.

Her bookingAmount
30 days × ₹150₹4,500
Delivery (within 3 km)Free
Order amount₹4,500
At checkout she also pays a small service charge. It is not refunded.

She pays in the app. Brouz holds the money — the walker gets it only when the work is done.

Day 1: the walker starts

On Monday evening, the walker reaches Meena’s house and taps Start work in the app. From now on, Brouz counts the days by itself — one for each day on the calendar.

For a short time after he taps Start work, Meena can still cancel and get everything back. The app shows how long. After that, pro-rata applies.

How much comes back, day by day

The refund is simple: ₹150 × the days left. Here is what Meena gets back if she cancels on different days:

If Meena cancels on…Days countedShe gets back
Before Start work0₹4,500
Day 1 (Mon 2 Nov)1₹4,350
Day 10 (Wed 11 Nov)10₹3,000
Day 20 (Sat 21 Nov)20₹1,500
Day 30 (Tue 1 Dec)30₹0
The service charge is not refunded in any of these cases.

Important: the day you cancel counts

On Thursday 12 November, Meena’s family decides to visit her mother in Madurai for three weeks. She needs to stop the walks.

Brouz counts every day from the first day up to today. Today counts, even if today’s walk has not happened yet.

When Meena cancelsDays countedShe gets back
Wed 11 Nov, 9 pm (after that evening’s walk)10₹3,000
Thu 12 Nov, 10 am (before that evening’s walk)11₹2,850

Cancelling the night before saves her one day — ₹150.

TipToday always counts. If you won’t need today’s service, cancel the night before — after the last walk you need, and before midnight.

How to cancel

  1. 1Open the orderIn the Brouz app, open the order and tap Cancel order.
  2. 2Check the numbersThe app shows the days left and what you get back — for example, “19 of 30 days — ₹2,850”.
  3. 3ConfirmTap Cancel & get refund. If you change your mind, tap Keep my order.

The walker is told straight away to stop. Your refund goes back the way you paid — UPI, card or bank — and usually reaches you in 5–7 working days.

If you think the amount is not fair

Days are counted by the app, so they are easy to check. For services the provider counts — like classes or boxes — you see the count go up in the app every time, and you get a notification.

If you feel the amount the provider kept is not fair — for example, walks were missed — raise a problem from the order within 3 days of cancelling. The Brouz team looks at the order and your chat, and decides.

If all 30 days go well

After the last walk, the walker marks the order done. You confirm in the app — or it completes by itself 3 days later — and the walker is paid. Then you can rate each other.

In short

  • Pro-rata means you pay only for the days that are done.
  • Your refund is: price per day × days left.
  • The day you cancel counts as a done day.
  • The service charge is not refunded.
  • The app shows your refund before you cancel.

Questions about pro-rata

Does every listing offer pro-rata?

No. Check the cancellation terms on the listing before you book. It says “Pro-rata” if it does.

Can I pause the walks for a few days?

No, an order can’t be paused. Cancel it, and book again when you are back. The money for the unused days comes back to you.

Is the delivery charge refunded too?

Yes, the same share of it. The refund is worked out on the whole order amount, delivery included. Only the service charge is not refunded.

What if the walker misses a day?

Message the walker in the Brouz chat, so there is a record. If walks keep getting missed, cancel and raise a problem from the order within 3 days. The Brouz team checks the chat and decides what is fair.
